How safe is chiropractic for a child?
Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of children’s health care. When a chiropractor adjusts a baby or child it is different than adjusting an adult as a baby’s spine is very supple during the first few months of life, so the doctor of chiropractic applies only a slight pressure to make an adjustment; many babies will even sleep through an adjustment as they are so gentle. For older children whose spine is still made of mainly cartilage, slight pressure followed by a gentle push is all that is required to put the vertebra back in place, and you may hear a click when adjusting children, which is common starting around age 2.
When should I take my child to a chiropractor?
When you want to give your child a head start in good health and all the benefits of a conservative, drugless approach to health care, you should take your child to a chiropractor. It is highly recommended that all children have a chiropractic check up shortly after birth as studies have shown that as many as 95% of newborns have spinal misalignments from intrauterine constraints and the birthing process. Unless there is a specific concern with your child’s spine, we recommend a chiropractic check up with achievement of each major milestone in the first year:
Holding their head up
Introduction of solid food
Crawling (or especially if they are not showing a cross crawling pattern)
Cruising along furniture
Your child’s spine grows doubles in length in the first two years of their life! It’s this kind of tremendous growth and developmental changes which make a complete chiropractic examination so important in the early stages of a child’s life. If there is a problem, the earlier it is corrected the less likelihood there is of it becoming a chronic or more serious problem later in life. Doctors of chiropractic believe it’s much more important to prevent diseases than wait till some disease occurs.
How effective is chiropractic care for children?
Chiropractors have been providing safe and effective care for children since 1895, and Chiropractic is the number one choice in complimentary health care. Some of the out common reasons that parents bring their children to a chiropractor include:
To help with Bedwetting
To help with behaviour problems
To alleviate digestive issues
To ensure good posture
To help with a child’s ability to concentrate
To help with colic and irritability in babies
To help with asthma, allergies and respiratory troubles
To strengthen immunity
For overall wellness
To maximize neural plasticity which means greater adaptability to your child’s brain development and function
How can chiropractic care help a child who is not ‘sick’?
Chiropractors do not treat diseases; they help to correct spinal misalignments that can cause health problems. Through regular adjustments, counselling on proper nutrition, exercise, and posture, the chiropractor can help you raise a child who is structurally and functionally sound. Children in today’s world are under more stress than previous generations and the result is our kids are sicker than ever before and their life expectancy is actually starting to go down from their parents, the first time in history!
Stress on our children comes in the form of physical events (bumps, falls, texting, screen time, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, etc. ), chemical exposure (genetically modified foods, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colours and flavours, hormones and antibiotics, long term and repeat medication exposure etc.) and emotional strain (crying it out, detachment from primary caregivers, bullying from peers, pressure from media influences etc.) a child who is well adjusted has a greater ability to adapt the stressors in their environment before it turns into dis-ease of their internal environment and prevent many chronic illnesses and conditions as they grow into adulthood.
What if my child has a health problem that does not respond to chiropractic care?
As primary care providers, Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to recognize complex health problems. Their primary obligation is the welfare of the child. Your doctor will make appropriate referrals to another practitioner if your child’s condition is beyond their skill and knowledge. It is important to remember that any person will have a greater advantage of achieving better health with a nervous system free of interference and for this reason many people will choose to include a chiropractor in their circle of health care professionals in co-management of illness.
There are so many different health specialists today, who is responsible for the health of my child?
You are. As a parent or guardian you must take responsibility for your child’s health and use your best judgment as to what is most appropriate for your child. Fortunately, there are some outstanding primary health care providers to help you make your decision, including your doctor of chiropractic, naturopath, pediatrician, and dentist. These professionals should make up your child’s personal health care team.
How long will I have to take my child to the Chiropractor?
After our doctors review all the relevant information to your child’s current state of wellness, they will make clinical recommendations on frequency of care and any adjunctive lifestyle recommendations (modified ergonomics, stretches, new back pack, supplements etc). It is important to adhere to these recommendations for optimal results. If you feel that these recommendations are not realistic for your family at this time then that is an honest conversation we encourage you to a have with us. Two things we care about greatly are your child’s health and our reputation as a healthcare provider; when you can’t comply with our clinical recommendations then you compromise both.
What you can expect is that your child’s progress will be monitored regularly for progress and when appropriate your child will graduate to wellness care, where they are no longer trying to overcome a condition, but rather trying to maintain their best health. Wellness care can range from weekly to monthly depending on the level of stressors affecting your child, and may need to be adjusted at different times of your child’s life (growth spurts, parents going through a divorce, starting a new school, football playoffs, cold season etc). Chiropractic care is not just a luxury for times of sickness; it is a necessity to achieve optimal health!
