What is contemporary acupuncture?

Contemporary acupuncture is a safe, effective and painless treatment that uses fine needles to target and stimulate nerves that are transmitting pain.  Acupuncture focuses on altering abnormal activity of the nervous system and its associated structures

How are contemporary acupuncture treatments designed?

Acupuncture treatments are designed to target “neuro-reactive” sites – specific points on the body corresponding to the nervous system.  When stimulated with acupuncture needles, these sites induce physiological changes to the nervous system, which in turn affect other parts of the body that are activated by the nervous system.   Various combinations of points are used depending on your specific condition the goals of your treatment.  Your chiropractor will determine the best course of treatment for your body.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments will depend on your specific condition and the goal of treatment.  More acute conditions will typically resolve within a few visits, while chronic conditions may take longer to fully recover.   The effects of acupuncture are cumulative, meaning that over time less visits are required to achieve the desired results.

How long does a typical acupuncture treatment take?

Typical treatments will range from 20 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on the nature of your condition.

How much does acupuncture treatment cost?

At Village Wellness we charge $60 for each acupuncture treatment.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

If your insurance coverage includes chiropractic, then contemporary acupuncture will be included under that designation also, since it is performed by certified chiropractors.   Currently, the government of Nova Scotia does not cover any portion of chiropractic or acupuncture therapy.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is one of the safest forms of healthcare utilized in our society.  It has been used for thousands of years on millions of people to alleviate pain and suffering.  At Village Wellness, our doctors of chiropractic have been highly trained and certified to administer acupuncture treatment. Only new, sterilized, and disposable needles will be used in your treatment to further reduce any risks of adverse effects.

Is acupuncture painful?

In most people, acupuncture does not cause any discomfort.  In fact, most find the experience relaxing and pleasant due to the universal effects of the treatment on your body.  The needles used are very fine and do not cause any damage to body tissues.

Is there anyone who should not receive acupuncture treatment?

You should not receive acupuncture if you have sepsis, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC) or a central nervous system infection such as meningitis.  Please also inform us if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have a coagulation disorder or have haemophilia, as these conditions may also be inadvisable in certain cases.
