We’re just a few weeks into the school year and winter wellness is already on the mind of most Moms and Dads as they wipe the first runny nose of the year! Symptom expression, aka a cold, is normal in healthy children and necessary as a way to strengthen the body’s immune system, but chronic illness or illness that requires emergency intervention is not. Here are some simple but effective daily steps to achieve a robust immune system and some tips for when inevitable illness does occur.

Essential Daily Supplements (yup every day!)

Identify any Food Sensitivities Specific to Your Child (elimination diets, blood allergy testing, Carroll testing)
Positive Affirmations & Connection: Uplift your child, make them feel special and appreciated, emotional health is so valuable!

To Avoid
Artificial Colouring and Food Dyes (Red #2, Blue#2, Yellow#5 etc.)
Food Additives (Aspartame, Sodium Benzoate, MSG etc.)
Gluten & Refined Sugar
GMO’s (genetically modified organisms, produce codes that start with 4 = conventional, 9=organic, 8=GMO; avoid the dirty dozen)
Excess Screen Time: <2 = zero, >2= no more than 2hrs/day, be mindful of their posture while using devices

Make Better Choices
Dairy: Humans do not need cows milk! But if you do eat it choose organic products (plain yogurt) and white cheese (No Orange Cheese)
Whole Foods Always Best (avoid packages and “food” with a shelf life) -> Growing Foods First
Get To Know Your Organic Section: offer growing number of healthier alternatives to main stream brands

If Your Child Is Sick (not all at once, but great starting points)
Fever = Fighting (Your child’s body is working! Fever elicits an immune response which creates stronger immune memory for future; monitor the symptoms not the number and provide fever lowering interventions when you feel necessary)
Ear Infections (over 70% viral = antibiotics do not work; AAP recommends WASP = wait and see period of 72hrs; dietary modifications + spinal adjustments effective at prevention; onion poultice 2-3x/day, 30-60minutes)
Congestion/Fevers: Cold Sock Therapy (wet wool + dry cotton socks covered in bed, dry within 3-4hrs), Respiratory Blend Essential Oils
See Your Chiropractor for an Acute Care Adjustment
Double your Vitamin D dose, if treating with antibiotics = double probiotics for 10 days post
Herbal Teas & Tinctures: Chamomile, Echinacea (lukewarm, add to bath), Astragalus
